Six firefighters, a fire engine and water tender were dispatched from Kirtland Air Force Base to help fight the fires near Los Alamos, N.M. from June 28 to 30.
Their assignment was to protect structures near Highway 4 and Forest Road.
"There were a few structures around there," said Philip Macias, 377th Civil Engineering Division Fire Department. "We were to support those homes in case the fire came that way. There were still a few residents in the area. We were there for them."
During the fire, a number of trucks coming down from the fire refilled their water tanks from the Kirtland AFB water tender. The Kirtland AFB team also made sure they were ready in case the fire came their way, both to fight the fire and to help evacuate any residents still there.
"We are very proud of our firefighters and the support they provide to the community in times of need," said Col. Robert L. Maness, 377th Air Base Wing commander.
Kirtland AFB firefighters train for multiple fire scenarios. They include structure support, wildland fire support and many others.
"We were just thankful the fire didn't turn toward those structures," said Macias. "We don't want any more homes lost. That's their home, their life. We don't want that to be lost. We're just here to help anyone when we're called out."
