This week in history: Army organized 1st Aero Squadron

KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- On March 5, 1913, the Army Field Order No. 1 organized Headquarters 1st Aero Squadron, when eight Wright and Burgess designs were brought together for the first time as a unit. The unit was based in Texas City, Texas, to support U.S. Army ground forces for possible response to the revolutionary forces of General Huerta in Mexico. 1st Lt. Roy C. Kirtland, for whom Kirtland Air Force Base is named, commanded the squadron from June to November 1913, before its move to North Island, San Diego, Calif., as a flying training unit. The squadron's heritage continues today with the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale AFB, Calif.
