The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center commander read to a group of first-grade students Aug. 20 at Sandia Base Elementary School's library.

Maj. Gen. Garrett Harencak read "Nathan Saves Summer" as part of a state initiative to encourage reading and provide books to every first-grader in New Mexico. The children's book tells the story of a hippopotamus who is discouraged by other animals about wanting to become a lifeguard at a pond. The story weaves in a theme of water safety.

Harencak had the children play along during the story, holding their breath when a character jumps into the pond. The children also heard the general growl and roar, playing characters in the story.

When he finished reading the story, Harencak handed out books to each student.

"Anytime I get an opportunity to contribute to our children's education, it is time well spent," said Harencak. "I thank all the Team Kirtland volunteers, and the teachers and librarians at Sandia Base Elementary School who are educating our children."
