Colonel Scott J. Smith

Colonel Scott Smith is the Commandant of the Defense Nuclear Weapons School.  He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University then was commissioned in 2001.  He earned a Master’s degree in 2005 from Boston University and the US Army War College in 2023. 

His prior assignment was at USSTRATCOM, Offutt AFB, where he served as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commander and as Chief Ballistic Missile Nuclear Weapons J87.

Additionally, Col. Smith has served as the Deputy Federal Program Manager and Executive Officer for the W88 Alteration 370 Nuclear Weapon Modernization Program at the National Nuclear Security Administration. 

Other assignments included being an Intelligence Test and Evaluation Officer at the National Assessment Group, where he served in a selectively manned OSD organization conducting quick reaction worldwide assessments for DoD and interagency customers; Division Collection Manager for 2ID, Camp Red Cloud, South Korea; commanded an MI Company at Buckley AFB, Colorado for the 743rd MI BN; served in Iraq on both a MiTT and BTT conducting FID missions in Eastern Iraq along the Iranian border; served as a missile maintenance officer for both Peacekeeper and MMIII ICBMs and MASO at F.E. Warren AFB; and served in Pakistan with Predator MQ-1 UAVs in support of OEF.
