Military & Family Readiness Flight

The Military & Family Readiness Flight (M&FRF) provides consultation services to commanders and assists them in developing and executing policies, programs and processes which enhance individual, family and community readiness, quality of life, and motivation to serve. 

Services provided to: 

  • All single and married Active Duty Members
  • All single and married Guard and Reserve Members while on active duty
  • Military retirees
  • Eligible family members of the above
  • DoD civilian personnel

Personal & Family Readiness


Personal and Family Life Education Provides prevention and enrichment education and consultation designed to enhance social competence for individuals, couples, and families, and build resilience skills that assist in navigating a mobile, military lifestyle. Focuses on assisting customers to develop, improve, or remediate interpersonal competencies and social relationship skills throughout the life cycle. Services should complement those offered by other helping agencies and incorporate both on and off-base partners as needed.

Exceptional Family Member Program Provides coordination of family support services on and off the installation to EFMs, who have physical, developmental, emotional, or intellectual impairments/disabilities. Provides EFMP information and education during awareness briefings/orientations for command, unit, and community. Personal and Family Readiness for Deployments, Contingencies & Emergencies Prepares families for the challenges of deployment. Supports families during deployment through the Hearts Apart program including Support Group, Morale Call program, Phone Home program, Give Parents a Break, Car Care Because We Care, and information and referral. Assists with reintegration and reunion issues.

Personal Financial Readiness Services Provides people with financial management, consumer education, and individual consultation including education and information on budgets, paying down debt, saving, and investing. The services are designed to assist people in managing personal finances and provide individualized training to help personnel get out of debt and gain money management skills.
Financial Workshops

Military Child Education Advocates for the educational needs of military children.  Assists Airmen and families with information and referrals regarding local school districts, and
other educational options including home schooling, private schools, charter schools, and cyber schools.  Ensures school personnel are aware of the unique issues impacting military children, i.e., deployment, frequent moves, etc.

Military and Family Life Counselor MFLCs are available to help service members, spouses, children and staff address:
  - Deployment and reintegration issues
  - Marriage and relationship issues
  - Parenting, sibling, and family issues
  - Communication challenges
  - Stress and anxiety
  - Depression
  - Grief and loss
  - Daily life issues

Information, Referral, and Follow-Up Services
This service assists individuals and families to identify and clarify needs, determine appropriate forms of assistance, and provide links to resources, including exceptional family member resources, on- and off-base services and information, as well as web-based resources.

Supports the diverse relocation needs of the Kirtland AFB Community.  Services and activities include:

The Air Force Aid Society is the official charity of the United States Air Force. AFAS Emergency Assistance
No interest loans, grants or combination of both may be available for financial emergencies such as:

· Basic Living Expenses – rent/mortgage, food, phone, utilities and gasoline

· Vehicle expenses – payment, repair, and insurance

· Emergency Travel

· Child Care

· Medical and Dental expenses

The Falcon Loan allows Air Force members to receive emergency financial assistance in a more
streamlined process. It is a loan of up to $750 and is meant for emergency needs listed above.

Every member retiring from the Air Force for either length of service or disability must schedule a briefing with the SBP Counselor.

VA Benefits Advisors
Advisors conduct the mandatory VA Benefits I and II Briefings and are available to meet for individual assistance to answer questions about VA benefits, eligibility requirements, and application processes. Available to assist Service Members, Veterans, Survivors, and Family Members with learning about and maximizing VA benefits and register on the eBenefits portal. Key Spouse Program
Key spouses are appointed by the unit commander to serve as a vital link between the unit and families. They assist families in utilizing community resources and provide support to the families of military members during their time of need.

Military Spouse 101 - Spouse Orientation
Military Spouse 101, formerly called Heart Link, is a fun way to learn about military and Air Force customs and traditions, benefit entitlements, and support agencies and services on base.  This program was designed especially for spouses with less than 5 years in the Air Force, however all spouses are welcome.  Strengthens military families and enhances mission readiness by helping spouses acclimate to the Air Force and the military environment.

Bundles for Babies
Bundles for Babies provides valuable information to help parents prepare and adjust to a new baby.  Each military family will receive a gift bundle, compliments of Air Force Aid Society.

Employment Assistance
Maintains information on the local job market, employment agencies, and nationwide and international employment. Conducts workshops on civilian and federal resumé writing. Provides personalized assistance on job search, interview skills. Hosts two job fairs each year and recurrent Hiring Events.

Air Force Warrior and Survivor Care Division
Ensures wounded, seriously ill, and injured Airmen, requiring long-term medical care and/or a medical/physical evaluation board to determine fitness for duty receive non-medical services, reintegration and extended transition support. Assists combat-related ill/injured Airmen and their families in receiving world-class personnel services and support.

Transition Assistance Program

Transition Assistance Program
Service members may start the Transition Assistance process not earlier than 12 months before separation or 24 months before retirement, and should complete all three parts of TAP no later than 90 days prior to separation or retirement date. 

The purpose of TAP is to ensure Service members are informed of the services and benefits available to assist them and their families throughout their transition to civilian life.  Spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend.

- Step 1: Pre-separation counseling is mandatory not less than 90 days prior to date of separation/retirement.

- Step 2: Transition GPS Workshop is a 5-day event that helps transitioning Service members meet the mandatory Career Readiness Standards (CRS).  Participants must wear casual civilian business attire and bring their laptop or tablet. TAP is mandatory for all separating/retiring Service members on Title 10 orders for 180+ consecutive days.  Spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend. Pre-separation Counseling must be completed before attending the TAP Workshop.

- Step 3: The Capstone Event should be accomplished not later than 90 days before separation/retirement.  The Capstone Event is a one-on-one meeting with an A&FRF staff member to verify completion of the Career Readiness Standards (CRS).  All separating and retiring service members on Title 10 orders for 180 (or more) consecutive days are required to meet all CRS.

COMMUNITY READINESS SERVICE DELIVERY

Community Readiness Consultants (CRCs) create partnerships with unit leaders to identify strengths, address concerns, and help resolve issues.

Each unit is assigned an A&FRF staff member as its Unit Liaison. Unit Liaisons meet regularly with unit leadership to establish a relationship, assess needs, plan and implement services to address leaderships' needs, and evaluate and sustain efforts.  CRCs assist commanders and directors in finding resources, usually through the IDS/Wingman PLUS and local agencies to address their needs.

The A&FRF provides individuals and families facing crisis situations with immediate, short-term intervention and referral to appropriate agencies and services.
