May 1, 1943: First enlisted Airman earns Medal of Honor
KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. – May 1, 1943: A B-17 on which Army Air Forces Sgt. Maynard H. Smith was waist gunner, came under intense enemy fire while returning from a mission. Smith, on his first mission, elected to fight a fire, administer first aid, man the waist guns, and fight intense flames alternately. For his actions, Smith received the Medal of Honor from Secretary of War Henry Stimson. He was the first enlisted Airman to be awarded the Medal of Honor. (Courtesy photo)

Kirtland officers receive Distinguished Flying Cross
KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- Capt. Christopher Palmer, 512th Rescue Squadron, was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross by Col. James Cardoso, 58th Special Operations Wing commander, during a ceremony here April 20. Palmer received the medal for flying two mass-casualty evacuation missions in Afghanistan in 2010. The medal is awarded to servicemembers who distinguish themselves by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight in support of operations. (Photo by Todd Berenger)

CAMP BASTION, Afghanistan -- U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. James Routt an HC-130P pilot with the 550th Special Operations Squadron and Capt. Phillip Varilek with the 71st Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, talk during the last combat mission of Routt's career, Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, April 12, 2012. Routt is currently the oldest active pilot in the Air Force and is augmenting for the 71st Expeditionary Rescue Squadron. The mission of the 71st ERQS is to provide personnel recovery, casualty evacuation and aeromedical evacuation assets to hostile locations.
