KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Museum of the American Military Family has a new home in Tijeras along Route 66.
“We are now located in an actual house,” said Circe Olson Woessner, executive director.
She added that due to the new location, the museum is able to display the furnishings of military families, as they would have actually been used in a military home.
The museum is set up to display a kitchen, living room, crafts room and its special collections library.
“Everyone here in Tijeras has been so welcoming to us,” Woessner said.
The Museum of the American Military Family is a non-profit and is the only one in the nation sharing the stories of those who served alongside the armed forces.
There are three special collections on display, one of which is letters and documents that capture family life and school for military brats.
“We have an overseas partnership with the American Overseas Schools Historical Society,” Woessner said.
AOSHS documents the school systems overseas for military brats.
Later in the year the museum will also begin to have movie nights.
“All of our staff is either a military brat, spouse or service member. In the case of one of us, it was all three,” Woessner said.
The grand opening of the museum is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 16 at 546B N.M. 333, Tijeras.
Normal hours will be 12:30-6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. Admission is free but donations are welcome. For more information, visit museumoftheamericanmilitaryfamily.org.
