Groups from around Kirtland Air Force Base will have a recruitment party starting at 4 p.m. April 14 at Hardin Field.

The Air Force Sergeants Association Chapter 1201 will host the event.

“We are trying to get more people from Kirtland active around the base and involved in the community,” said AFSA Chapter 1201 Public Affairs Trustee Staff Sgt. Alexandria Salminen.

The event is open to all with base access.

The organizations involved include the Team Kirtland Top III, Kirtland 5/6 Council, AFSA and the Kirtland Spouses’ Club.

Food trucks will be on site for attendees to purchase food. Beer and water will be available.

For the kids, a selection of bouncy castles will be at the event.

Raffle tickets will be handed out to people who sign up for an organization. The prizes include a weekend stay at the Marriott, a Dave and Buster’s package and gift cards.

Following the recruitment party, a movie in the park will start about 7 p.m. The movie is “The Sandlot.”

The AFSA Kirtland chapter donated popcorn and snow cones for the showing.

Salminen said being part of an organization has allowed her to meet people she wouldn’t have otherwise been mentored by or met.

AFSA is dedicated to maintaining benefits received from Congress for Air Force members.

The organization is also active in the community and spends the last Friday of every month volunteering at the New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers. The VIC helps homeless and near-homeless veterans.

The Kirtland chapter meets at 11:30 a.m. the third Thursday of the month at the Thunderbird Inn.
