A lemonade stand is a welcome sight on a hot day but two enterprising girls here recently turned it into a profitable opportunity to benefit Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Ava Farfour, 11-year-old daughter of Col. George Farfour, Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, and Skylar Lamb, 12-year-old daughter of Tabetha and Lt. Col. Steven Lamb, 377th Air Base Wing, decided to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey by raising money.

Their idea was to have a lemonade stand and simply take donations. With supplies purchased by Ava’s dad, they made signs and two types of lemonade, baked cookies, and set up their stand in the base’s housing area.

“Lots of people stopped because they thought we were just selling lemonade,” Ava said, "but when they found out it was for Harvey relief, most gave a lot. Two people gave us $20!”

After only an hour of waving down passers-by with their signs, they were out of cookies and had $116 in donations.

“One guy gave us all the change in his ashtray, which was almost $10,” Skylar said.

“Almost everyone who stopped at the stand was touched by the girls' idea to donate to Harvey victims,” Farfour said.

The girls’ proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.
