Col. Michael S. Duvall, 377th Air Base Wing commander, left, presents the Bronze Star Medal to Maj. Johnathan B. Zulauf, 377th ABW Command Post, at a ceremony March 5. Major Zulauf distinguished himself in a combat zone through exceptionally meritorious service while serving as deputy commander of the 855th Air Expeditionary Squadron, while engaged in ground combat operations against the enemies of the United States, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan, from April 29 through Nov. 20, 2009. Major Zulauf personally planned and executed more than 150 mounted combat patrols in the critical suicide-vehicle-borne improvised explosive device-rich Kabul Capital Region, with more than 3,200 miles on Afghanistan roads, placing him at significant risk to hostile action multiple times throughout his tour.
