'Operation Carpetbagger’

“Carpetbaggers” from the 801st Bombardment Group and 492nd Bombardment Group toured 58th Special Operations Wing aircraft Sept. 7. Under the codename “Operation Carpetbagger,” aircrews flew secret night missions over occupied Europe during World War II dropping a variety of supplies to resistance forces in Europe. Supplies included weapons, ammunition, food, clothing and many other daily necessities. From January 1944 to May 1945, they completed 1,860 sorties and delivered 20,495 containers and 11,174 packages to resistance forces in western and northwestern Europe. (Photo by Todd Berenger)
