Point 1: The Honorary Commanders program at Kirtland Air Force Base aims to strengthen the relationship between the military installation and the local community.
Point 2: The Honorary Commanders Induction Ceremony saw 53 inductees from various sectors of the community paired with commanders from the installation to foster an enduring partnership.
On Oct. 2, Kirtland Air Force Base held its Honorary Commanders Induction Ceremony, hosted by Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander. The event brought together distinguished guests, commanders, and inductees to celebrate the strengthening of relationships between Kirtland AFB and the local community.
Power expressed his enthusiasm for the program. "When I was stationed here as a Squadron Commander, I had an Honorary Commander. I thought this was the greatest program," he shared. Now, as the wing and installation commander, he ensures the continuation of this "robust program" that strengthens the bond between the Air Force Base and the local community.
The Honorary Commanders program aims to connect more people with the Airmen and Guardians, supporting their families in areas of education, employment, and wellness. It also strives to increase public awareness and understanding of the missions of the US Air Force, maintaining a positive reputation as a good neighbor.
“This civic outreach program is how we show you we are part of your community,” Power added.
Leaders from various sectors of the community, including industry, business, local government, and the educational system, were chosen to be Honorary Commanders. Each paired with a commander from the installation to foster an enduring partnership. Their dedication to strengthening the relationship between the community and the US Air Force reflects the core principles of integrity, service, and excellence.
During the ceremony, the honorable Tim Keller, Mayor of Albuquerque, was paired with his Honorary Commander, Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, and inducted into the program.
The honorable Robert Noblin, Mayor of Belen, the honorable Gregg Hull, Mayor of Rio Rancho, and Dr. Cindy Sims, Estancia Schools Superintendent, were among those inducted as Honorary Commanders. In total, 53 community members were inducted into the program
"As an Honorary Commander, you will act as an advocate and partner in our collective mission to protect and defend," Power said. He highlighted that the Honorary Commanders Program is one of the most robust in the US Air Force, proudly strengthening the relationship between the Air Force Base and the local community.
The ceremony was a testament to the commitment of the team Kirtland to establish and maintain personal contact with local civic leaders, increasing public awareness of its missions, policies, and programs. As new Honorary Commanders are inducted, the relationship between Kirtland AFB and the local community continues to grow stronger.
