Members of Team Kirtland gathered to trade their uniforms for aprons at the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Paint Night at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, April 16.  The event offered Airmen and Guardians a creative outlet to express solidarity and reinforce a collective commitment to a safe, respectful workplace. Attendees filled their canvases with vibrant flowers in an atmosphere of quiet reflection, providing a relaxed environment for attendees to discuss the importance of fostering a culture of dignity and respect across Kirtland AFB.

Every April, the Department of War observes Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) to raise awareness on the impact of sexual violence and educate the community on prevention strategies. By combining advocacy with art, the SAPR team continues to provide unique avenues for education, ensuring that every member of the Kirtland community understands their role in preventing harm and protecting the force.

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program is the cornerstone of advocacy within the military, led by the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) and supported by Volunteer Victim Advocates. The program provides 24/7 confidential support, crisis intervention, and guidance on both restricted and unrestricted reporting options. Beyond reactive support, the SAPR office focuses heavily on prevention training, giving Airmen the tools for effective bystander intervention and the ability to foster healthy unit climates.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, the Kirtland SARC office is available 24/7. You can reach the Kirtland SARC hotline at 505-846-SARC (7272) or contact the DoD Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247. For in-person support or information on upcoming SAAPM events, the office is located in Building 20604. Preventing sexual assault is a mission-essential responsibility, and resources are always available to ensure no member of the community has to navigate these challenges alone.
