KIRTLAND AIR FORCE, N.M. -- When it comes to readiness and resilience, Maj. Lechtenberg doesn’t just talk the talk—he runs the miles. This September, he’ll represent Team Kirtland at one of the Air Force’s most competitive events: the Air Force Marathon at Wright-Patterson AFB.
Held annually at Wright-Patterson, the Air Force Marathon is a multi-race event that attracts thousands of runners from around the globe. In addition to the full marathon, it features a half marathon, 10K, and 5K, and celebrates Air Force heritage with flyovers, static displays, and themed challenges.
Selected as one of only 30 runners across the Department of the Air Force to compete in the full marathon as part of the Stratosphere Challenge, Lechtenberg joins an elite team composed of the top runners from across the force.
“Running and competing have been central to my life since I was young,” said Lechtenberg. “And this marathon allows me to combine that passion with my Air Force Service”
This won’t be Lechtenberg's first time toeing the line at a major event. With seven marathons already behind him, including the Boston and Marine Corps Marathons, he brings deep experience and tactical discipline to every race.
At the 27th Annual Air Force Marathon, he placed second overall among military competitors and third overall in the men’s division. This year, he’s aiming to finish first overall.
His selection is no small feat. The Air Force Marathon isn’t just a morale event; it’s a showcase of grit, stamina, and total force readiness.
The physical demands of training for a 26.2-mile race mirror the endurance required for military leadership. “Marathon training cultivates resilience and mental toughness,” said Lechtenberg. “Long runs and challenging workouts teach me to persevere through discomfort and overcome obstacles. This mental fortitude is crucial in the Air Force, where we often face stressful and demanding situations."
The Air Force Marathon is a showcase of connection, competition, and pride among airmen from every Major Command and component. Lechtenberg earned his place on a handpicked team selected from over a hundred applicants. He was chosen based on race times, competitive experience, and his ability to represent the Department of the Air Force on a national stage.
“Representing Kirtland Air Force Base through DAF Sports at this marathon is a real honor,” said Lechtenberg. “While it adds a sense of responsibility to perform my best, knowing I'm running not just for myself, but for my unit, wing, and Kirtland Air Force Base, is a powerful motivator.”
As the September race nears, Lechtenberg continues his training while balancing work, family, and mentorship duties. And while the miles may be long, his focus is clear: to lead by example and embody the values of perseverance, readiness, and excellence that drive Kirtland’s mission—and prepare every airman to fly, fight, and win.
“I'm grateful for the chance to represent Kirtland and will do my best to make us proud,” said Lechtenberg.
The DAF Stratosphere Challenge is a program supported by the Air Force Services Center that enables select Airmen to compete in high-profile athletic events. The initiative covers travel and registration, turning elite performance into an opportunity to represent both installation and career field through sport.
