The Air Force Research Laboratory recognized outstanding contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math education in New Mexico at the annual Excellence in STEM Awards, also known as the STEMYS. Leaders from across the state gathered June 13 at Q Station in Albuquerque to honor this year’s winners as part of its mission to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Each year, the STEMYS reflect AFRL’s ongoing commitment to cultivating a capable workforce by honoring excellence in education and outreach across communities throughout New Mexico. Awardees range from elementary, middle and high school students to educators, mentors, and organizations.

“Here in New Mexico, what we’re doing is leading the discovery, development, and delivery of directed energy systems,” said Col. Jeremy Raley, director of AFRL’s Space Vehicles Directorate, highlighting the lab’s evolving mission, and its critical role in advancing both directed energy and space technologies.

This year’s STEMY Award winners, recognized for their strong interest and ability in STEM, represent a wide range of accomplishments:

· Student K-8: Skylar Gamache (Homeschool)

· Educator K-8: Dr. Jaime Acosta (Chaparral Middle School)
