KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Defenders of the Force
Security Forces – the largest career field in the United States Air Force, with the duty to protect, defend, and fight.
“Bounded by a collective sense of purpose, devotion, and duty to one and all.” – Kiersten A. Fausto
Beyond the eyes of the beholder, Defenders are Airmen who carry the legacy of operations, tactics, traditions, and honor. From base defense and field instruction to security, they are the "jack of all trades." Despite early mornings, late nights, long days of training, and substantial amounts of weapon systems and duty gear, we are the gateway to the Air Force and the last line of defense.
Alongside our important roles in our personal lives, we are also part of a mission much larger than ourselves. We are trained to handle various situations at any time and in any place. The strength and perseverance instilled within our defenders are bright and steadfast, as the mission remains. The honor of the Security Forces shield and navy-blue beret signifies responsibility, authority, achievement, and recognition, distinguishing its elite members. This legacy dates back to the 1041st Security Police Squadron and Operation Safeside during 1965-67.
Throughout our careers, we are told, "Remember your why’s and hold onto them tightly," leaving us with the question of "how?" ... When the "why" is strong, the "how" is answered. Every donning of each navy-blue beret and pinning of our shield connects us with the past – its history, the present – its structure, and our future.
