Mountain Home AFB offers trailers for Yellowstone camping

If Yellowstone National Park is in your vacation plans during the 2007 summer season, you will want to consider a few different options for accommodations.
Do you want to camp out? There are a number of campgrounds within the park. You will need to make reservations several months in advance. If you do not have advance reservations, you may be able to get a site by going to the campground of your choice by 9 a.m. If someone is leaving, you can take their spot. To be safe, make sure you have an alternate spot outside the park since there is a lot of competition for these sites.

Would you like a guarantee of a place to stay in a very nice campground within minutes of the park entrance? Consider the Yellowstone Country Trailer Program. The trailers are offered by Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho's Outdoor Recreation. They have thirteen trailers that are set up and ready for you to move into.

The trailers include utilities such as water, sewer, gas and electricity, already connected for your convenience. The trailers come equipped with dishes, pots and pans, and other accessories to make a kitchen functional.

Mark Lothrop, the outdoor recreation director at Mountain Home, said, "We will have over 400 families take advantage of this program. We are open from Memorial Day through mid-September, with thirteen trailers at two great locations; we should be able to meet your needs."

Flagg Ranch, just outside the south entrance to the park, is great for its spacious, timbered sites and its proximity to both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. The rate for Flagg Ranch is $78 a night.

Lionshead Resort, with its five trailers, is only eight miles from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park and the wonderful town of West Yellowstone, Mont. The rate for lodging at Lionshead is $70 a night.

While this may sound expensive for camping, remember - the set up and installation of the trailers is complete. Since the trailers have fully functioning kitchens including, oven, refrigerator and microwave, a family can enjoy substantial savings over restaurant eating. Motels in the area are well over $100 a night and do not have spots for evening campfires or cooking.

The trailers have been renovated recently - new window coverings, seat cushions, oak trim and baseboard molding installed and many new kitchen items purchased. Mark Lothrop, program director, said, "The trailers are in great condition and we are ready for another great summer."

The outdoor adventure office begins accepting telephone reservations for May and June on April 2. On May 1, they will accept reservations for July. Beginning June 1, you can phone in reservations for August and September.
