The Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course is getting a make over.

Actually, according to Doug Carlton, golf course manager, the make over has been going on for a couple of years now and players will see the improvements this season.

"There were irrigation, drainage and other issues that prevented us from having healthy grass," Mr. Carlton said. "With these problems being addressed, we've undergone aggressive aeration, top-dressing and rolling, which has greatly improved the quality of the greens."

Nearly 100 new irrigation heads have been added or replaced in anticipation of planting seed this spring.

Other issues such as root and prairie dog damage have been repaired and damage to cart paths have also been fixed.

Over 300 tons of sand has been added to the bunkers to improve their consistency, course wide. Even the on-course bathroom got a much needed make over.

The driving range is also getting some much needed improvements. The area has been expanded and is almost completed. The only thing left, according to Mr. Carlton, is to wait for warmer weather so the new area can be seeded and the existing tee and landing areas can be over seeded.

In addition, some new equipment has been added. There are 59 new golf carts with windshields and new club and ball washers. They are also expecting the construction of a new shelter in the future.

Mr. Carlton said, with the Masters Tournament right around the corner, now is the time to dust off those clubs and get back into the swing of things at the Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course.

One way to do that is to sign up for the Spring Fling Golf Tournament coming up on April 25. Cost is $35 per player, $25 for E-4 and below. It's a four person scramble format and the cost includes green fee, cart, prizes (gross and best scores, longest drive, closest to the pin and more) and snacks and soft drinks after the tournament.
