The 377th Medical Group will begin flu vaccinations soon.

Seasonal flu epidemics occur annually in the United States. Estimates of flu-related events include 95 million infections, 25 million physician visits, 200,000 hospitalizations, and an average of 36,000 deaths annually in the U.S.

Immunization is the key to seasonal flu preparation and prevention.

The Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices has issued a universal recommendation for flu vaccination for all adults and children older than six months. High-risk groups should be targeted, but immunizing healthy persons is also recommended.

Flu activity usually peaks in the U.S. between late December and early March, so it is best to get your shot at the earliest possible opportunity.

This year's vaccination incorporates the H1N1 strain, so you will only need to receive one flu shot.

Flu immunization will be available in either the intranasal version (Flumist) for those who meet certain criteria or the injectable version for all others.

The 377th MDG expects to have flu vaccine available for all beneficiaries in October. Active-duty members must obtain their flu vaccine from the 377th MDG.

Family members and retirees may use a network pharmacy to obtain their flu vaccine.

The flu vaccine is a covered benefit under the Tricare Prime program and is available at participating network retail pharmacies.

All non-active-duty beneficiaries, and especially those considered high-risk due to chronic medical conditions, should get immunized as soon as possible.
