CGOC visits Trinity Site, VLA

Kirtland Air Force Base -- Fourteen officers, family members and friends of the Team Kirtland Company Grade Officer Council took a group road trip Oct. 2 to the Trinity Site and the Very Large Array.
Located on what is now White Sands Missile Range, the Trinity Site was where the world's first nuclear bomb test occured and is open only two days a year to the public.
The CGOC took advantage of this opportunity to learn about the history of the experiment, explore the site, and stop at the McDonald Ranch where technicians assembled the bomb.
The group also took a guided tour through the VLA control center where 27 82-foot-wide antennas feed images and information electronically into one central computer.
It also included a demonstration of how the dishes are reconfigured and how a complex network of antennas is used to see ever further into space.
The council's next meeting is today at 3:30 p.m. in the Mountain View Club.
