An energy-saving initiative is taking place in three parking lots at the Veterans Administration/377th Medical Group campus.

Preparation work was accomplished in October to have solar panels installed as a covered parking structure. The electricity generated will feed directly back into the VA power grid system.

Between Dec. 15 and Feb. 3, 2011, sections of the parking area in front of the main clinic and the dental clinic will be blocked off.

Phasing was done this way to minimize the effect on the handicapped and patient parking each day.

The overall cost of the project is $19 million for the lot behind the Medical Group and two VA parking lots.

It is expected to generate 4.9 million kilowatt hours of electricity, 20 percent of the VA's annual electric usage.

The dates of the construction could change based on unforeseen circumstances.
Questions or concerns should be addressed to the Medical Logistics Flight commander, Capt. David Barker, at 846-3680.
