Celebrate our independence

Wednesday marks the 236th year since our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Two years later, Gen. George Washington marked the occasion with a double ration of rum for his troops and an artillery volley. We now mark Independence Day with fireworks, parades, barbecues, sports, family vacations, and other activities.

As we take time off with our friends and family to celebrate the birth of our nation, let me again thank you for your hard work and dedication in defense of our nation and the Constitution we have sworn to uphold. I am proud to lead the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center - the Nucleus of America's Deterrence.

Let us also take time to remember our fellow warriors serving overseas, working long hours and at risk, who cannot celebrate with us, and especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of the liberty we hold so dear.

While you are enjoying the holiday, take a few moments to remember risk-management principles and to put them in to practice. The Little Bear Fire recently near Ruidoso and the state's largest-ever fire, in the Gila Wilderness, provide a caution to us all. Take care while barbecuing or camping, and avoid the use of fireworks in this extremely dry weather.

Additionally, take care when out in the sun, swimming, and enjoying sports. Let people know where you are going, don't drive or boat under the influence, and don't overextend yourself when traveling. Don't become a statistic over the Critical Days of Summer, and do look out for motorcyclists and bicyclists.

Supervisors, take a few minutes to check in with your folks as they take time off this summer - know where they are going and what they will be doing, and remind them to use all the safety tools and concepts.

Team members, look out for each other. Let's all enjoy Independence Day, and more importantly, let's all come back safe after.

Thank you again for your dedication to duty and the United States Air Force.
