The Space Development and Test Directorate supports Kirtland Elementary School, just outside the Carlisle Gate, by collecting and purchasing school supplies for the nearly 400 students whose families may not be able to afford school supplies on their own.

This is SDTD's fourth straight year delivering supplies to the school.

SDTD officially adopted Kirtland Elementary School about five years ago.

"Our partnership with Kirtland Elementary is extremely important to the men and women of SDTD. What could be more essential than getting the year started successfully for these terrific kids? They are the future innovators of our nation's space programs," said Col. Michael Moran, SDTD director.

In addition to the school supply drive in August, each October, SDTD holds a Halloween party, complete with trick or treating inside SDTD buildings to support the kids and families. The Halloween atmosphere is created with a haunted house, spooky hallways and a directorate full of costumed characters.

In November and again in December, SDTD donates Thanksgiving meals and holiday gifts to the families of Kirtland Elementary. All these activities are orchestrated by Karen Elquist, the SDTD lead for the Kirtland Elementary School partnership. Times are tough for many families in the Albuquerque area.
