It's almost Halloween, and that means giggling ghosts and winsome witches will be trick-or-treating in your neighborhood.

Taking the following precautions will ensure all little boys and "ghouls" have a safe and happy Halloween.

 Small children should never be out on their own. Ensure that a responsible adult is present at all times.

 The speed limit in Kirtland Family Housing is 15 mph.

 Equip children with a flashlight, glow stick, or reflective tape on their costumes and bags if they will be out after dark.

 Costumes should not impair a child's hearing or field of vision; ensure that the costume will not cause the child to trip and fall. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, well-fitting shoes.

 Walk on sidewalks when available, not in the street. Stay in familiar and well-lit areas.

 Use caution when driving in populated areas. Children may be in a rush to visit as many houses as possible and may suddenly dart into traffic. Give them ample time to cross the street; their costumes may not allow them to see and hear you.

 Give children an early meal so they don't snack on their treats before they're inspected. Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before eating. When in doubt, throw it out.

For Kirtland Family Housing residents: make sure your yard is free of objects that may present a tripping hazard for the little ones.

Properly secure all pets. If using candles with decorations, place them out of the way of trick-or-treaters.

Security Forces will be patrolling the streets Halloween night to ensure a safe experience for everyone.

If you see an unsafe act, report it immediately to the Base Defense Operations Center at 846-7913.
