Maintenance operations provides administrative support to the 58th Maintenance Group. About 85 billets will now fall under the new Maintenance Operations Flight, with roles and responsibilities remaining unchanged. "While this squadron is going away, the personnel and the people who made this squadron what it is will remain, and I know they will continue to work hard and make great contributions to the wing and the Air Force," said Col. Gregory Endris, 58th Maintenance Group commander. The squadron's former commander, Maj. Michael Scianna, is moving to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, where he will work for the Air Force Institute of Technology as a logistics instructor. Scianna received the meritorious service award at the ceremony. He also made some remarks, saying goodbye to those formerly under his command. "I salute the men and women of this squadron and I am extremely humbled and proud to be the last commander of this squadron," he said. "It has been an honor to lead this squadron for the past two years." The inactivation was part of an Air Force-wide initiative to restructure the aircraft maintenance career field. The move frees up field grade officers to serve as maintenance operations officers. Forty-seven maintenance operations throughout the Air Force have been inactivated. "The squadron leaves a legacy of excellence," said Master Sgt. David Schummer, former first sergeant of the 58th MOS. "The previous three major inspections, the squadron achieved 'excellent' ratings, so it has a proven track record."
