KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- All music files, movies, games, YouTube content and other copyright material will be deleted from organizational drives and personal user drives on Dec. 9.
The 377th Air Base Wing has purchased a new enterprise data storage solution for NIPRNet users at Kirtland. This new data storage repository will store all electronic records, shared organizational data, and personal user drive data. Any copyright material will be deleted.
“In order to preserve the investment value, it is critical that proper data management should be a key business practice,” said Elias Tellez, operations flight chief of the 377th Communications Division. “A prime component in our business practice is to enforce the guidance provided by Department of Defense Instruction regarding the protection and liabilities regarding copyright materials.”
All files that meet copyright material criteria will be removed and blocked from being stored by the 377 Communication Division on Dec. 1. These files will not be restored to the network without a copy of the appropriate license agreements. The following file types will be removed unless an exemption has been identified: *.mp3, *.cda, *.wav, *.mov, *.flac, *.aiff, *.wma, *.aac, *.webm, *.mkv, *.flv, *.vob; *.gif, *.gifv, *.avi, *.wmi, and *.wmv.
“An official data storage policy will preserve the longevity of the storage solution, ensure legality of the material being stored, and provide for future growth,” Tellez said.
For more information about the policy, or to seek an exemption for storage of these files, contact the 377th Wing Cybersecurity Office at 846-6398.
