Historical Air Force Insignia
To strengthen the stature of the NCO Corps, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg approved the development of a new grade insignia for junior airmen. After multiple test locations reported on the new insignia, in Dec.1952, Vandenberg authorized a new “Horizontal” chevron for grades E-2 through E-4.2
