On Sept. 25, 1918, Lt. Eddie Rickenbacker attacked seven German aircraft and was later awarded Medal of Honor for his actions. The American “Ace of Aces” achieved 26 aerial victories in two months of combat flying. When the U.S. entered World War I, Rickenbacker became a driver for the Army general staff in France. He got a break one day when he fixed a car carrying Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell. He made his interests in flying known to Mitchell, and Rickenbacker, 27, entered pilot training. In March 1918, he was assigned to the new 94th Pursuit Squadron. On Sept. 24, 1918, Capt. Rickenbacker was named squadron commander. The next day, he claimed the downing of two German planes, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1931 by President Hoover.
