Master Sgt. Lucas Avery, Defense Nuclear Weapons School instructor at Kirtland, demonstrates techniques in radiological detection to members of the Texas Army National Guard and area first responders Feb. 2 in Round Rock, Texas. Avery is a member of the mobile training team that traveled to Texas to teach the DNWS Introduction to Radiological and Nuclear Incident Response course.

Commander's challenge
Justin Simpson, a member of the Kirtland Air Force Base team, aims a signal-jamming device at an unmanned aerial system as judges and range personnel watch Dec. 12 during the 2016 Air Force Research Laboratory Commander's Challenge at the Nevada National Security Site near Las Vegas, Nevada. Teams were given six months to develop a complete system to aid in base defense. Kirtland's system is able to detect, identify and track unmanned aerial systems with the capability of engaging through signal jamming and capture using a net gun.

Mentoring program

Toy drive
The local Air Force Sergeants Association chapter is collecting holiday gifts for patients at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital. The toy drive runs through Nov. 30.
