Kirtland offers activities in celebration of Police Week Published May 11, 2016 By Kirtland Public Affairs KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Kirtland is offering a host of events to commemorate the observance of National Police Week, which takes place May 15-21. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as "National Peace Officers Memorial Day," and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as "National Police Week." Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C., to participate in a number of planned events to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The schedule for Kirtland's Police Week activities: Fun Run May 16 at Hardin Field 8:30 a.m. Cost is $14 per person, and proceeds will be donated to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. To register, email cody.gill.1@us.af.mil. K-9 Competition May 16-18 The 3rd Annual 377th Security Forces Squadron Kirtland K-9 Competition will honor fallen military working dog handlers Marine Cpl. This event is taking place at the Sandia Softball Fields near the old Kennel, in the area of Pennsylvania and Barrack Road. Police Week Retreat/Memorial Ceremony May 19 There will be a retreat ceremony at Hardin Field starting at 4 p.m. There will be a formation standing for retreat but will also have seating for approximately 200 attendees. This ceremony is open to the base populace. The ceremony will honor all OSI and Security Forces officers fallen since the Global War on Terrorism as well as fallen officers from surrounding local law enforcement agencies. Golf Tournament May 20 at Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course Sign in is at 8:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $50 per player and includes green fees and lunch.
