KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- More than $15,000 in scholarships was awarded by the Kirtland Spouses’ Club at their annual awards banquet April 24 at the Mountain View Club.
Frank Capuano, KSC president, said it was the largest amount the club has awarded in a single year. They have awarded more than $60,000 in the last five years.
“No two recipients have traveled the same path and we’re proud to be part of their journeys,” Capuano said.
Sixteen individuals received scholarships, including some entering college, some continuing their education and several military spouses working towards online degrees.
Most of the funds given were gained through the KSC Thrift Shop. Capuano said that in the past year, volunteers have donated more than 8,000 hours in running the thrift shop.
Two special awards were given in honor of members of the community who donate their time and skills to the KSC. Victor Ortiz provides pro bono tax accounting services to the club. The Victor Ortiz Scholarship was given to Ellen Hayes, a senior at La Cueva High School who will be attending the University of North Carolina in the fall. Bobbie Collins provides the KSC with pro bono legal counsel, advising the club on legal issues and compliance regulations. The Bobbie Collins Scholarship went to Sabrina Dalton, a military spouse continuing her education at an online university.
Melissa Galbreath, the scholarship committee chairperson, said she is proud of all the recipients.
“It’s not every day we get to give back to the community. It’s a privilege and honor to know these individuals personally and to send them off to school with a little something to help them have a good start.”
The KSC is an all-volunteer, private organization committed to promoting a sense of community, support, and purpose for military spouses. The KSC has defined a community of spouses and established a tradition of philanthropy. In addition to the scholarships, the KSC gives about $10,000 each year in grants.
