On Aug. 13, 1952 Air Force officials approved the full scale production of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War deterrence, the B-52 replaced the Convair B-36. A total of 744 B-52s were built, with the last one delivered in October 1962.
