For Airmen in the Air Force, working together as a team can be a key piece to successfully accomplishing their mission. One team at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, was acknowledged for such solidarity while performing their duties during the Air Force Medical Service competition.

This month, the 7th Medical Support Squadron laboratory team was recognized as the 2018 Biomedical Sciences Corps team of the year at the Air Force Global Strike Command level.

The team was chosen as team of the year due to their outstanding record of four perfect no-notice inspections with no deductions from the College of American Pathologist’s quality assurance standards. The laboratory also played a key role in doing tests on pilots involved in a B-1B Lancer in flight emergency in Midland, Texas, ruling out human error as the cause, which played an instrumental role in the Air Force-wide safety stand-down. With a new equipment overhaul, the team has also been able to reduce the turn-around time on laboratory tests by nearly 72 percent.

“The team won because of their cohesive behavior,” said Lt. Col. Gloria Walski, 7th MDSS commander. “They take a lot of pride in what they do in their office. Everyone wants to perform well and, because of their hard work, it doesn’t surprise me that they won this award.”

After winning the award at the AFGSC level, the team will continue on to compete at the Air Force level.

“In my eight years of experience in this career field, I know getting recognition like this isn’t typical,” said Staff Sgt. George Egan, 7th MDSS noncommissioned officer in charge of chemistry. “We are behind closed doors and most people don’t fully know what we do, so it’s nice to see an award like this. I am very proud of our Airmen and everyone that works hard on our team.”
