On Veterans Day weekend, while much of the base was enjoying time off from work, members of the Kirtland Honor Guard were representing the base across the state of New Mexico at various events.

"We had numerous details on Veteran's Day weekend and our Airmen were eager to serve," said Master Sgt. Nathan Johnson, honor guard superintendent. "The Honor Guard Airmen never complain or resist this job, and are some of Kirtland's unsung heroes."

In an effort to show appreciation for their efforts and thank them for their professionalism in representing the base, the First Sergeants Group, Rising Six, Top Three and Chiefs Group are providing a quarterly meal to the honor guard members.

Johnson said the Airmen truly appreciate these organizations stepping up and providing these meals.

"It lets our members know people do care what about what they are doing, and gives them an opportunity to have personal interaction with base leaders they might not get at their work centers, and gives them an added incentive to provide service that is perfect and flawless," he said.

Johnson said the Airmen deserve recognition, but that is not they reason they volunteer to serve as honor guard members.
