Tax center seeks volunteers

Providing a place for service members to get help in filing taxes is a major base initiative, but it cannot operate without the help of volunteers.

The Kirtland Income Tax Center, which provides tax filing services to eligible service members, will open Feb. 3. However, many of the volunteers from last year moved or were reassigned, so the need for additional volunteers has increased.

"The tax center is run completely by volunteers," said Capt. Ashley Norman of the Legal Office, who is organizing volunteers. "That's why the volunteers mean so much, because it wouldn't function without them."

Training for volunteers will take place Jan. 13-17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Distance Learning Center in the 377th Air Base Wing Headquarters Building. Those who can't make the class can train on their own via an IRS training packet available at the Legal Office.

"There are a lot of tax issues for military members, so it is important to have a place where our personnel can get assistance from people who have been trained on those issues, without having to spend any money," Norman said.

The tax center will be open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information about the tax center or to volunteer, contact Captain Norman at 853-7465.
