College scholarships available for military dependents Published Jan. 16, 2014 By Elise Thomaston Kirtland Spouses Club KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Many high school seniors have begin submitting college applications, with tuition costs often the biggest concern. The Kirtland Spouses Club aims to help college-bound military dependents by awarding several scholarships. In 2013, the KSC awarded $7,000 to five applicants. The amount awarded this year will depend on how much money is collected. Funds are collected through charitable donations, dues, and profits from the Kirtland Thrift Store. "Since all Kirtland Spouses' Club socials have a small ticket price, all funds collected are given back to the community through welfare grants and college scholarships so that there can be the biggest positive impact," said Deanna Dopslaf, scholarship chair. Applicants are selected through an anonymous evaluation process, and there is no preference given to KSC members or their children. The largest awards are given to those who show merit and determination, demonstrated through a resume, letters of recommendation and a written statement. All local military dependents are eligible, including spouses and dependents of former military members. To learn more about the scholarships, visit www.KirtlandSC.org to read the rules and to download the application. The deadline to apply is March 14.
