Kirtland Tax Center set to open Feb. 4 Published Jan. 21, 2014 By Capt. Ashley Norman Legal Office KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Kirtland Tax Center will open Feb 4 to provide free tax-filing services to eligible customers. The Tax Center will be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., by appointment. It is located in the Consolidated Support building, between the MPF and DBIDs. When possible, electronic tax returns will be filed so people may receive refunds quicker. The Tax Center is manned by volunteers, and has partnered with the Internal Revenue Service's VITA program. Volunteers will be available until about April 11 to prepare tax returns for E-6s and below, O-3s and below, and retirees with gross income of $60,000 and below. The center is unable to assist others due to manning constraints. Some filers will be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable credit for people who earn less than $51,567 ("earned income" = wages from working). The credit could be as much as $6,044 depending on your filing status and the number of qualifying children. A person may qualify for the EITC even without a qualifying child if they earn less than $14,340 ($19,680 if married filing jointly). For more info, visit the IRS website. What to bring to your appointment: -- Proof of identification -- Social security cards for every dependent (ITIN for foreign status) -- Birth dates for you and every dependent -- A copy of last two year's federal and state returns -- Income statements: W-2, W-2G, 1099s -- Direct deposit information -- Total paid for daycare provider and provider's tax identifying number -- Education documents During the first two weeks in February, services will be limited to E-4s and below with simple returns (no itemized deductions). This is because of legislation passed in December 2010 which prevents the IRS from processing returns for those who itemize deductions until late February. Accordingly, filers who itemize will have to wait until mid to late February to file their returns. At that time, the tax center will be open to all other eligible customers. Beginning Jan. 28, call 853-7465 to make an appointment. Beginning Feb. 4, call 853-1700 to make an appointment. For more information, call 853-7465.
