Youth Center offers spring baseball league Published Feb. 4, 2014 By Adam Bailey Nucleus staff writer KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Kids looking for a way to be active this spring have an opportunity with a baseball league. The youth center is holding registration for their annual youth baseball league. "Last year we had a pretty good turnout with six teams for one league and four teams for another league, giving us almost 100 kids participating," said Tyrone Griffin, Youth Center sports and wellness director. The year's league is broken up into three divisions: tee ball for ages 5 to 8, coach pitch for ages 8 to 10 and kids pitch for ages 10 to 18. "I try to have 10 to 12 kids per team with four teams per league, so the kids can all play without having to do doubleheaders and really wearing them out," Griffin said. Practices will be two times a week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. The coaches have not yet determined the place and time of the practices. Baseball league registration is open through March 7. There will be a meeting for parents at 5:30 on March 17 at the Youth Center. The season starts March 24 and runs through May 17. Games will be Saturdays at the East Side baseball field, which is near base housing. "The sooner you register, the better," Griffin said. "That way, we're able to order enough uniforms and have enough equipment." Registration is $35 for Youth Center members and $50 for nonmembers. There is a $5 late fee after March 7. Participants are required to have a physical exam on file at the sports office prior to the first practice. Forms can be picked up at the Youth Center or found under the Youth Center tab on kirtlandforcesupport.com. The Youth Center also offers sports camps as well as football, basketball and soccer leagues throughout the year. For more information, call the Youth Center at 846-4092.
