Leaders receive information on Wounded, Ill, and Injured Program Published April 4, 2014 By Teresa Reinhard Community Support Coordinator KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- In an effort to increase support to wounded, ill or injured service members, Kirtland hosted a seminar to educate leaders across the installation about a helping program. Forty commanders, supervisors and first sergeants attended a presentation called "Wounded, Ill, and Injured: What Commanders Need to Know" to help learn more about their roles and responsibilities in assisting these service members. The presentation aimed to assist leaders in ensuring both combat and non-combat wounded, ill, and injured military members receive all the services and support mandated by Air Force. A member may be placed in the program due to a combat wound or injury, but may also be included due to a non-combat event that results in a serious or very serious illness or injury, such as a motor vehicle accident, heart attack, or a mishap, such as sustaining a fall while off-duty. Chief Master Sgt. John Dougherty, 377th Air Base Wing command chief, was one of the program presenters and has been instrumental in ensuring WII members at Kirtland are supported. "I can't emphasize enough the importance of team work from our medical team, the recovery care case managers, and of course our helping agencies to serve our WII personnel," he said. "I am confident every person who needs care, is getting it with our recovery care model." The information will be presented again in September.
