Maj. Gen. Sandra Finan, Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center commander, was recognized with the Young Women's Christian Association's "La Estrella" award at a banquet April 10.

The YWCA annual "Women on the Move" awards recognize extraordinary women who are making significant contributions to their community. Recipients have distinguished themselves through their chosen fields and through their community leadership.

The award recipient is the woman on the move who has reached extraordinary heights in her personal and professional life and leads change for women and their communities, according to Amy Whitfield, president and CEO of YWCA New Mexico.

"General Finan's exceptional service and leadership prompted the committee to choose her as the awardee," she said. "By sharing her knowledge, expertise, work ethic and talents, she makes a difference in the lives of others, and her dedication inspires others to make a difference."

In her acceptance speech, Finan said she was honored to be recognized by such a prestigious organization.

"Thank you for your tremendous efforts in so many important areas," she said. "You help address meaningful matters for today and for the future, and I thank you for the time you spend and for the hard work you contribute to fighting for these causes. You are touching lives and inspiring many through your efforts."

Women on the Move has honored more than 1,000 exceptional women around the nation who have been champions for the empowerment of women and social and racial justice in their communities.
