Outdoor Recreation gears up for camping Published April 16, 2014 By Adam Bailey Nucleus staff writer KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- It's warming up, and that makes it the perfect time to go camping, and Kirtland's Outdoor Recreation has everything needed for a trip. Outdoor Recreation offers camping equipment to rent, like backpacks, cooking gear and fishing equipment. "We recently got a lot of new camping gear like tents, sleeping bags and Scamp travel trailers," said Joni VanMeir, Outdoor Recreation director. "We also have peddle boats that we got last year that are really great to use for fun or to go fishing." There is also sport equipment, party equipment and lawn and garden tools for rent. "There's no limit on how much you can check out, and you can check things out year round," VanMeir said. Outdoor Rec has a reference computer people can use to research locations, camping sites and trails. "Having people come here to research camping trips is great, because if they have any questions, we have programmers here to help answer them. Most of us fish, hike or bike, so there's a good chance we've been to the area," VanMeir said. Outdoor Rec also provides monthly activities for anyone with base access. In April, Outdoor Rec will have a horseback-riding trip, rock-climbing classes and a paintball event. In May, there will be whitewater rafting, a Rio Grande River clean up and rock-climbing classes, and the outdoor pool will open Memorial Day weekend. Outdoor Rec offers private bookings for custom trips. Groups must have eight or more people and a date for the trip. Outdoor Rec will then help plan the full details of the trip and how much it will cost. For more information, call 846-1499 or go to www.kirtlandforcesupport.com.
