Kirtland to observe National Police Week in May Published April 22, 2014 By 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Public Affairs KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- National Police Week 2014 is May 11-17. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as "National Peace Officers Memorial Day," and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as "National Police Week." Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C., to participate in a number of planned events to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. At Kirtland AFB, a number of events are planned to commemorate the observance of Police Week.
