Crime is on the rise in Albuquerque, and the base wants to help its members protect themselves.

Kirtland is presenting a crime prevention and safety awareness workshop Sept. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the 377th Air Base Wing Presentation Center.

Dinah Dziolek, a key spouse member, requested the workshop due to the fact that many spouses were being affected by crime in their off base communities.

"I'm always looking for ways to help and empower our families," she said. "I thought this was a great opportunity to organize an event where families could ask experts questions regarding their concerns and we could give them knowledge to help them protect their families."

Monte Waters, crime prevention specialist for the 377th Security Forces who will be the presenter for the event, will teach attendees how to protect themselves from home burglaries, car theft, identity theft and more.

The event is being sponsored by Wingman Plus, the base's helping agencies. For more information, contact Teresa Reinhard, community support coordinator, at 846-6427.
