Kirtland to host women's wellness fair Oct. 24 Published Oct. 3, 2014 By Capt. Eugenia Rush KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- You'll be seeing pink this month, as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month, individuals wear pink items and brands release pink products as a way to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the second most common kind of cancer in women. "About one in eight women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point," said Tech. Sgt. Korrine Kargl, maternal child health flight chief. "The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it's found and treated early." To celebrate the month at Kirtland, the 377th Medical Group is hosting a "Give Breast Cancer the Boot" women's wellness fair at the Rio Grande Community Center (Bldg. 20226) Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mobile mammography exams will be available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kargl said women ages 40 to 49 should talk with a doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them. Woman age 50 to 74 should get a mammogram every two years, at least. "Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer," she said. "Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms or if you meet criteria for genetic screening." To make a mammogram appointment in October call 232-2049.
