Wayne Bitner, in the red shirt, chief of environmental restoration for Kirtland's Installation Support Team (Air Force Civil Engineer Center), speaks at a community meeting. The event was organized by the New Mexico Environment Department and held near the site of the Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill on Oct. 21. Bitner discussed the base’s remediation efforts, including soil vapor extraction, where fuel vapor is drawn from wells near the fuel leak. The group also went to Montessa Park to discuss the general geology of the Rio Grande Basin and Chavez Community Center, where there are three monitoring wells. Among those who participated in the field trip were professionals from the New Mexico Environment Department, U.S. Geological Survey, New Mexico Bureau of Geology, Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, U.S. Air Force, Air Force Civil Engineering Center and CB&I, the contractor for Kirtland’s remediation effort.
