The Air Force is continuing investigation of the Kirtland Air Force Base bulk fuels facility fuel leak by installing new groundwater monitoring wells in the Siesta Hills, Elder Homestead and Trumbull Village neighborhoods.

Construction is set to begin the week of Nov. 17 and should continue through December. Contractors will install five clusters of three wells each consisting of one shallow, one intermediate, and one deep well. Additionally, a single deep probe well will be installed to determine the depth of a plume of ethylene dibromide, or EDB, associated with the leak.

The groundwater monitoring wells are being installed to address remaining data gaps and further characterize the horizontal and vertical extent of the dissolved phase EDB plume. Data collected will be also used to design a "pump and treat" extraction well for the EDB groundwater cleanup system, which is planned for installation in 2015.

Well drilling and installation is expected to last approximately four months. For more information on this project, contact the Air Force Civil Engineer Center's Office of Public Affairs at 866-725-7617 or at afcec.pa@us.af.mil.
