Providing a place for service members to get help in filing taxes is a major base initiative, but it cannot operate without the help of volunteers.

The Kirtland Income Tax Center, which provides tax filing services to eligible service members, is seeking volunteers. The tax center will open Feb. 3 in the Consolidated Support Center.

Training for volunteers will take place Jan. 12-16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Distance Learning Center in the 377th Air Base Wing Headquarters Building. Those who can't make the class can train on their own via an IRS training packet available at the Legal Office.  Those volunteering for an administrative position do not need training.

The tax center will be open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information about the tax center or to volunteer, contact Capt. Szonja Johnson at 853-7465 or szonja.johnson@us.af.mil.
