Fitness Center gears up for post-holiday crowd Published Jan. 9, 2015 By Ryan Stark Nucleus writer KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- With the bustle of holiday season, it can be easy to forget all the fun will be ending soon. That may mean hitting the gym to help with New Year's resolutions and losing the pounds gained during the holidays. The Fitness Center at Kirtland sees an increase in traffic in January and February, which may be a bump from the post-holiday exercise crowd, according to recreation specialist Yvette Woodard. "We see it every year," Woodard said. "People come in starting in January to participate for health reasons, to get back into exercise and to lose weight." She said the center offers free classes, including a kickboxing-style workout and a muscle hour class for all fitness levels. There is also a "basic training" class with cardiovascular, strength, endurance and balance elements and hour-long classes to prepare for the Air Force Fitness Assessment Test. There are also pay-as-you-go classes offered by the Fitness Center. Zumba dance and exercise classes, yoga stretching and combat hapkido classes are available. The center's gym and facilities offer well-maintained, modern exercise equipment, including calisthenic machines, racquetball courts, weight machines, pick-up basketball and volleyball games. The Indoor Pool, which is just west of the center, has even more year-round opportunities for exercise. The facilities and classes are open to active-duty military, civilians, Department of Defense employees, Sandia National Laboratories staff members and others with base access. The center also holds occasional special events, such as a "Biggest Loser" contest planned for June.
