Outdoor Recreation offers summer entertainment

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  Kirtland's Outdoor Recreation is stepping up its offerings for the summer.

Misty Kuhl and Chrystal Tyndall are building an array of trips to appeal to the diverse community on base, they said.

"We are trying to offer trips on regular basis that are close to base," Kuhl said. "We have adventures that are close to home that will, hopefully, foster a sense of community."

On Saturday, Outdoor Recreation will take a group on a hike in the Sandia Mountains. The Pino trail hike, which is part of the Single Airman program, will be $10 per person. It also departs from Outdoor Recreation at 10 a.m. and returns at 2 p.m. Hikers should expect a workout on that one, and they should bring a lunch, snacks, water, sun protection and sturdy hiking shoes, Tyndall said.

"That hike tends to get steep last mile or so," she said. "It's pretty mellow in the beginning and it's definitely doable," she said. "These trips are great for people who are new to the area and don't know the trail system. I had one participant who didn't feel comfortable doing this by himself. After he went with us he was ready to go out on his own, though."

There is also a wine or brew tour, alternating every month. Not everyone likes wine  and not everyone likes beer, Tyndall said, so there is a little variety built into the schedule. The upcoming tour, which costs $10, is on June 28 meeting at 11:30 a.m. and will go to Anasazi Fields Winery in Placitas. Then, on July 11, Outdoor Recreation will take a group to Nexus Brewery in Albuquerque. That tour meets at 12:15 p.m.

"I would recommend people eat before and bring something for the ride back," she said.

There are many more tours and events planned for the summer, and Outdoor Recreation also offers rentals for outdoor and party supplies and much more.
