Kirtland Fitness Center issues running challenge Published July 9, 2015 By Ryan Stark Nucleus writer KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- A new program at the base fitness center challenges Team Kirtland run roughly the highway distance between Albuquerque and San Diego, 750 miles, in a year. That is the target distance for "Run New Mexico," from July 1 to June 30, 2016. Jonathan Varela, a recreation assistant at the center, said Run New Mexico was developed as part of an Air Force effort for fitness centers to stage motivational events each year. This is the first time the center has done the event. "The past few weeks, we've received a bunch of inquiries on it. Hopefully, we'll have a good turnout," Varela said. Those who sign up for the program will self-report their miles. All participants will receive a prize. For information, or to sign up, call 846-1102.
